Patrick from TFBTV stopped by the house the other day to show me the scope he borrowed for use on the Remington MSR he has on loan from DSG Arms. What really caught my eye was the size of the Leupold Mark 8 3.5-25x56mm scope. This particular model has the illumined Horus reticle in the first focal plane, odd M5B2 turrets, and the Mark 8 IMS mounting system. This package retails for just over five thousand dollars! After you look through it and see the glass quality you expected, the next thing you notice is the elevation knob. It has a external, tool-less, repositionable, and changeable scale screwed to it. Interesting. On top of the that knob features a “pinch-and-turn” lock that will in the very least take some getting used to.
Here is what Leupold says about this 16″ long, 2.3 lb behemoth:
With the Mark 8 3.5-25x56mm, you can dominate at any distance. The 8:1 zoom ratio gives you a huge field of view at lower powers, or crank it up to 25x to lock in on a distant target. The new Mark 8 features a low-profile M5C2 ZeroLock Elevation Dial that locks at the zero position, and gives you a visible and tactile revolution indicator. A non-illuminated reticle provides more mounting space for greater flexibility.
Variable Power: With nearly twice the field of view of competitive 25x scopes, the 8 to 1 erector system offers superb target discretion at high magnification for precision and an expansive field of view at low magnification for quick target acquisition. The ability to optimize the zoom setting for a variety of thermal or night-vision equipment is indispensable for tactical operators. + 35mm Maintube: Unparalleled windage and elevation adjustment travel, and the ability to bypass the zero stop in the BDC dial makes zeroing a breeze. + Variable Illumination Reticle: The third generation, seven-position illumination control with positive off between each setting allows operators to match the reticle illumination to the ambient light conditions or tailor settings to night-vision devices.
M5B2 Elevation Adjustment: the ergonomic, Auto-Locking Pinch and Turn adjustments provide 20 milliradians of elevation travel (10 Mils per revolution). A tactile revolution indicator provides visual/tactile feedback of the dial position.
Keep your eye peeled for more impressions.
